A loan you repaid still appears unpaid. Or a repayment is wrongly marked late. Before arguing about your credit score, make the inaccurate entry—and your request to correct it—easy to prove.
An eligible credit-information complaint that takes more than 30 calendar days to resolve can attract compensation of ₹100 for each calendar day of delay. The practical starting point is a dated complaint with supporting records.
An existing protection worth using
This is not a new rule announced today. RBI issued the original compensation framework on 26 October 2023. CIBIL’s implementation guidance states that it took effect on 26 April 2024; complaints initiated before that date are outside this framework.
The RBI Commercial Banks–Credit Information Reporting Directions, issued on 28 November 2025 and updated on 1 July 2026, retain the compensation provisions in paragraph 36. Recent Mint coverage published on 8 October 2026 at 11:43 PM IST brought bank-service deadlines back into focus. This guide concentrates on credit-report complaints.
Build one small complaint file
Use the lender’s or credit bureau’s official complaint channel. Identify the exact account, the disputed entry and the correction you seek. Avoid a vague request such as “please improve my score”.
Keep these together:
- The report showing the entry, its date and report reference number.
- Relevant repayment receipts, statements or a loan-closure confirmation.
- Your submitted complaint, acknowledgement, reference number and filing date.
- Every response and the report received after resolution.
Provide accurate contact and compensation-payment details through the official channel. Do not publish account numbers or documents in a social-media complaint. A folder labelled with the complaint reference is more useful than scattered screenshots.
Track the overall deadline
Under RBI’s framework, the lender and bureau collectively have 30 calendar days to resolve the complaint. The lender’s 21-day correction window sits within that process; it is not an extra 21 days to add to the overall 30-day limit.
For an original illustration, suppose an eligible complaint is resolved 10 calendar days after the permitted 30-day period. The delay-based compensation is ₹100 × 10 = ₹1,000. It is not calculated from the date you first noticed the mistake. Responsibility is apportioned between the institutions according to their delay.
RBI defines the resolution date as when the rectified credit-information report is sent to your supplied postal address or email. Compensation should reach the nominated bank account within five working days after resolution. Ask for the recorded filing date, resolution date, delay calculation and payment details if they are unclear.
A correction is not a promised score increase
Correcting inaccurate account data is different from asking for a higher score. Cases already decided by, or pending before, courts, tribunals or consumer commissions are also excluded; other exclusions apply under RBI’s directions.
CIBIL says delayed resolution can qualify even when a complaint ultimately results in no change to the report. That does not make every service request eligible, erase accurate missed payments or guarantee loan approval.
For wrongful denial of compensation, RBI provides an Ombudsman route; for institutions outside that scheme, its regional Consumer Education and Protection Cells are the stated alternative. Keep the complaint history ready.
Check the corrected entry itself before assuming the problem is over. The reader benefit is a usable record of what was wrong, when you reported it and how it was resolved.
